barrio Prado Centro. Fue casa de familia, salón de banquetes y restaurante, y
hoy por hoy es usada en ocasiones para conciertos de rock.
Otra de las maravillas del caleidoscopio cultural que llamamos Medellín.
¿Dónde alojar a un visitante del Antiguo Egipto en la
capital de la montaña? Por extraño que parezca, existe en nuestra ciudad una
edificación idónea, hecha de piedra rosada pálida, con jeroglíficos cincelados
y columnas con tallas de flores de loto.
Se trata del Palacio
Egipcio, situado en la carrera Sucre
con la
calle Cuba (el eclecticismo de
esta ciudad no conoce límites.) Por encargo del doctor Otto Estrada, -su
propietario- la estructura fue construida siguiendo el modelo arquitectónico
del Antiguo Egipto, lo que le da a la casa un aspecto irreal, de desconexión
completa con lo que le rodea, como si alguna tormenta de arena la hubiera
envuelto, arrancándola de sus cimientos en un barrio rico de mercaderes
egipcios, para venir a aterrizar en pleno Prado Centro.
En el recorrido hasta el Palacio Egipcio, no sólo resulta posible sino inevitable admirar la
belleza de las viejas casonas del sector, que fue en una época hogar de la alta
sociedad medellinense, entre las décadas de los 30 y los 50. Narra la tradición
que el sector fue inspirado en el opulento barrio Prado de Barranquilla, de
arquitectura exquisita, y hogar de los comerciantes ricos de la ciudad que
amasaron gracias al puerto sus fortunas.
